Cumberland rd sports ground was in Cumberland rd.
There was a pub in that road and the entrance to the ground was down the side of the pub,,
I think it was called the Cumberland arms

The link bellows takes you to a Ordnance Survey map. I think the entrance was at the eastern end of Elkington Road was the.

Number 101 Cumberland Road was the Duke of Cumberland pub.

Mick, many thanks for your link, most helpful. Cumberland Rd was well away from Ashburton school, which was on the corner of Russel Rd & Freemasons Lane. The map clearly shows a large recreation ground opposite the school where the annual sports day was held.

Cumberland rd sports ground was at he end of palmers rd. through an alley way with bollards. &  tucked away  on the right.

So it was between palmers rd & new barn st.
Palmers rd started at prince regents lane practicly opposite the old fire station.
Hope this helps.
Regards Ron.

An easier reference was that it was at the back of Plaistow Grammar School. Was it originally the play area for this school?

Hi Alan, now I am confused, PGS was in PR Lane towards Greengate.
Thankfully Micks link to a Ordnance Survey map brings me back to reality.

Hi Ken Cumberland sports field was behind PGS as you walked along Prince Regents Lane.
I,m surprised that you cannot remember the sports ground as a pupil at Shipman Road I can remember going there for sports day with the school[in a previous post I mentioned "throwing the cricket ball" and the"slow cycle race".
obviously we used two other sports grounds "The Rec" and by the old gun sight along the old Beckton Road .

Thank you all for your advice on location of Cumberland Rd sports ground.
Harry, the year that I entered for throwing the cricket ball, Andy Nelson, he of West Ham fame, won the contest.
