Denis McNamara
« on: 31 August, 2015, 09:49:21 AM »
Hi everybody . After watching a nostalgic video of trolley buses in West Ham ,there was a clip of Stratford Broadway .probably around 1960 ,with a policeman on point duty with the traffic circulating around him . It then brought back memories of Dennis McNamara ,a West Ham policeman , but also an Olympic and commonwealth games heavyweight wrestler . He was a larger than life character often seen on duty around Stratford and as a teenager ,if you were up to any mischief and "Big Mac " told you to stop ,you didn't give him any cheek ! But he was always a gentleman .
Does anybody else remember him ?    Al

Hi Al

I don't remember Denis but looking up his history I would imagine he was a good deterrent from committing a crime as it says he weighed 16stone and was 6ft 1.

It says he was 6 times British Champion and the British and European Police Champion.

Regards
Linda

Hi Linda , yes Big Mac was was a very imposing character . In his day the sport was strictly amateur so he had to work to earn a living but he was a very approachable policeman and was very well known around the area if only for his size . Al

Those were the days when West Ham policemen mingled with the community.
As a member of a local motorcycle group the 2 local speed cops would keep a keen eye on our activities & a quiet word at times was respected.

Hi Ken, it's a shame that photos still can't be viewed on here as I found a good one of him which I printed on here in 2015.

It's surprising there are so few pictures available of Dennis McNamara. I have found only one and a very good one at that,  but unfortunately it is subject to copyright.

What I can do however is post the link to the website where the picture can be found. The link needs to be copied and pasted into your browser address bar.
