East Ham School
« on: 01 October, 2013, 10:51:31 AM »
My late father was at school in West Ham from around 1924-1936. He remembed how when in the school choir George Bernard Shaw came to the school and they sang to him his favourite song
Danny Boy. Does anybody have any memories of this or know which school it might have been. I think he said Vera Lyyn lived near too above a chip shop.

Welcome to the Forum Paul.

I have searched the internet but have been unable to find any reference to George Bernard Shaw visiting a school in West Ham but hopefully maybe other forum members will have more luck.

With regard to Vera Lynn, she was born in 1917 in Thackeray Road, East Ham and moved to Ladysmith Road East Ham when she was four. Apparently in 1938 she moved with her parents to Upney Lane, Barking.

If you go to the Search Box at the top of the page and type in Vera Lynn there are several references to her but I couldn't find anything about her living above a chip shop.

Regards
Linda

Vera Lynn moved in with her grandmother following death of her grandfather.  She moved into no. 38 ladysmith avenue.  My grandparents lived at no. 43.
