"BB" Baldwin Butler
« on: 28 July, 2008, 06:53:27 AM »
From this week's "Forest Gate News", newsletter from Forest Gate Community School:

Baldwin Butler ("BB")
(1941 - 2008)

Baldwin Butler ("BB") was well known to many of our students and parents. He was the school chef at Godwin School and he also ran BB's Club at 53 Hampton Road, Forest Gate for over 20 years. He was a reggae and sould DJ in the 1960s and 1970s and had a collection of thousands of records. The club was built at the back of his house, but had room for nearly 200 peaople! It was a very important place for noth the local Caribbean community who regularly played dominoes there and also for local musicians. BB opened up his club to Forest Gate students when they wanted to hold Valentines parties, fundraising concerts for the New York trip and more. He always cooked enough delicious chicken, rice and peas for 100 people even if there were only 20 there! There could never be another place like BB's club.

BB sadly died from prostate cancer on Wednesday 3rd July. He will be remembered as a generous and friendly man. His funeral was held last Friday on Romford Road and the church was full to the brim, showing just how many people in Forest gate loved his club, his cooking and the man himself.

I agree with all the above. Forest Gate will be a poorer place without BB and his club.
