East Ham 1971 to 2014
« on: 04 November, 2015, 06:19:13 PM »
I married Judith Viney in 1969 in Paddington where we lived until 1970, when we moved to Forest Gate, and then in 1971 we bought 86 Keppel Road. Rachel was born in 1970, Reuben in 1972 and Rebecca in 1977. Judith worked as a nurse until Rachel was born, and I worked for housing associations in London from 1969 until now. The kids all went to local schools - Altmore, Lathom, Nelson, Langdon and Brampton - and went to University. They also went to the Academy of Music. We had great neighbours and many local friends. I was a Labour and Co-op Councillor 1979 to 1983, and we were active in Newham North East Labour Party for many years. Central and Plashet parks (the latter with a small zoo) were frequent Sunday afternoon walks. We used to drive out to Essex - Maldon and Epping Forest especially - at the weekends, initially in our 1957 Morris Minor and then after 1977 in our 1964 VW camper. Motorcycling led to a friendship with John and Irene Soilleux (now in Chipping Sodbury) and their 3 children. EE Atkinson's motorcycle shop was at the end of our road, with a lovely Rudge Ulster in the window. Shopping was mostly at the (new) Sainsburys, in the market and at Safeways. We bought big items from East Ham Co-op.

Over the years the make up of the community changed and it was fascinating to hear new languages spoken in the streets. Gradually racism left the area, often with a much needed hard push.

I left Judith in 1996 and have lived in Sydenham ever since. When Judith very sadly died last year (2014) I went back and saw the house for the first time for 18 years; she had looked after it very well and I was sad that we had to sell it. Iris at 84 had died some years before, but Lal and Nirmal are still at 88.

I love East Ham and was very sad to leave it.
