Infant Evacuees
« on: 27 September, 2011, 04:40:02 PM »
My mum as a baby was evacuated from Forest Gate to Chobham, Surrey in 1944 and she vaguely remembers it being called Chobham or Brook House.

The Surrey History Society, have come across a reference of Chobham House (formally Brook Place) being used as a nursery home for children from London, but they have no official records to corroborate this.

They have also checked Surrey County Council, who also returned a blank.  I understand that many large country houses and estates opened their doors to wartime evacuees, but many were not run in any official capacity, so tracing this or finding any records is remote.

Does anyone else recall this place, as I assume she wouldn't have been the only one?
