I too was having trouble logging onto the forum and could not reply to messages or post new ones. I have been on to the Web Master / Technical Team, who have worked some magic. The Forum has been updated, you will notice the new look of the page. Hopefully all is now ok. I am sure you will let me know if there are any problems.

I am so sorry that you are annoyed by the ’jibberish postings’. I am sure you will be pleased that I have now deleted them. Since this forum opened in July 2008 I have also blocked 134,686 spammers from becoming members, as well removing any spam that is posted and banning those that have posted it. It may surprise you to know that I am not on the forum 24/7.

Recently I have had several complaints about the content of many of the messages posted over the recent months i.e. general chat about, music, cooking, cats, cars etc. and I would also like to take this opportunity to remind members that messages should be about Newham, i.e.  your memories of Newham, its history, and questions about the borough  and its people.

I have just heard back from the technical team who say: "I don't think it is the site, I've checked fairly carefully. Something has taken over smudger's browser". Anyway I am glad that you have now sorted the problem.

I personally have never seen this advert and I am not aware that this has been 'added' by the forum's host but I will pass this on to the tech team and will get back to you. My guess is this is something on your PC. Can you tell me if this only happens when accessing the Newham Story forum or does sit happen on other pages that you vist.

I just wanted to point out that the previous forum [Newham Local History Bulletin Board] that you refer to was not ‘run’ by Ray Savory, but was in fact setup by the London Borough of Newham’s I.T. department.  Mr Savory acted as one of the moderators for about 3 or 4 years.

in my frustration I also made an unduly critical comment on the limitations of the Newham website. Result? That message was removed. Sorry, Administrator.

Bert, I am a bit confused by your comment as I have not removed any messages.

This thread is drifting into a political debate and this is not the place to discuss the Freedom Pass and the politics behind it. Let’s keep the Newham Story focused on the history of the borough.

I would just like to remind you all that the Newham Story Forum is for discussing local and family history matters. As a number of threads are straying into general chat I would like to take this opportunity to ask you to please keep the posts on topic and related to Newham’s history.

MBrennan asked, in relation to a spam message posted on the forum at 07:04 this morning:
I thought there was an option with this forum software to get moderator approval for new members? - You could tell in one sentence whether someone was a troll or a hammer?

The registration process on this forum is automated but there is an efficient spam-guard facility which highlights and blocks bad IPs etc, whilst some are referred for approval. I monitor the site at least 4 or 5 times a day, but with the best will in the world I cannot be on hand 24 hours a day. Consequently a very small number of spammers do beat the system but are removed manually and banned.

To date:
48,599 spammers have been automatically blocked from joining the forum
928 spammers have been manually banned from the forum
250+ spammers are manually rejected on a daily basis

On the post of 10/02/2012 that you are referring to, MBrennan has not uploaded a photographs of the Queen, but he has posted a link to The Daily Mail website.

Sorry if I got the posts and images a bit mixed up but I was just trying to point out that the 5 W’s make a big difference to a photo.

If you don’t know what I mean by the 5 W’s, they are…… WHO….WHAT….WHEN….WHERE….WHY….

Copyright is a very complex issue.

"For literary, dramatic, musical or artistic works (including photographs):
70 years from the end of the calendar year in which the last remaining author of the work dies.

If the author is unknown, copyright will last for 70 years from end of the calendar year in which the work was created, although if it is made available to the public during that time, (by publication, authorised performance, broadcast, exhibition, etc.), then the duration will be 70 years from the end of the year that the work was first made available."

Some of you have been uploading some fantastic family photos and it would be nice to see more of these, as long as they are of Newham people, but it is so frustrating to see a photo and all that is written about it is something like ‘this is a photo of my nan’.

When someone has gone to the trouble of uploading you could at least give us some basic details like name, age, occupation etc and possibly an anecdote about that person. Or what is happening in the photo. Just a few sentences can really bring a picture to life. You can go back to your original post and click the modify tab to add details of the photos.

These are just some of the posts that I am referring to:
MBrennan -  granddad on steam trains at Temple Mills
WillB’ - gran, an East End Lady
Will B - Nan & Granddad in the late 20s
Serena7 -  grandmother in Nan & Granddad in the late 20s
